Calculate your weighted and unweighted Grade Point Average.
GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by dividing the total quality points earned by the total credit hours attempted. Each letter grade corresponds to a point value multiplied by the course credit hours.
For top law schools (T14): median GPA is typically 3.7–3.93. For medical schools: average GPA for accepted U.S. students is around 3.7. LSAT/MCAT scores are evaluated alongside GPA. A lower GPA can sometimes be offset by exceptional test scores, upward grade trend, or exceptional research experience.
One bad semester hurts but isn't permanent. After 4 semesters at 3.8, one semester of 2.5 (15 credits each) drops cumulative GPA to 3.55. Recovery takes time but is achievable. Some schools offer grade forgiveness (retaking courses replaces the old grade). Check your specific school's policies.
