Favicons & App Icons

A favicon is the small icon displayed in browser tabs and bookmarks. App icons appear on home screens and in app stores. Both require multiple sizes to look sharp across different devices and pixel densities.

What file format should I use for favicons?

The .ico format is the most universally supported — it can contain multiple sizes in one file. Modern browsers also accept PNG favicons. SVG favicons (rel="icon" type="image/svg+xml") are supported in modern browsers and scale perfectly at any size.

Why does my favicon not update after I change it?

Browsers aggressively cache favicons. Hard-refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R) the tab, or clear the browser cache. You can also bust the cache by adding a query string to the favicon URL: href="/favicon.ico?v=2". Favicon updates can take a day to propagate in bookmarks.

What makes a good favicon design?

Effective favicons are simple, bold, and readable at 16×16 pixels. A single letter, symbol, or logo mark works better than a detailed illustration. High contrast is critical — the icon must be visible on both light and dark browser chrome. Avoid thin lines that disappear at small sizes.
