How to Resize Images for Any Platform

Image resizing adjusts the pixel dimensions of an image — the actual width and height. This is different from compression (which affects file size without changing dimensions). Resizing is essential for optimizing images for specific platforms, screen sizes, or file size requirements.

Aspect Ratio Explained

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between width and height (e.g., 16:9, 4:3, 1:1). When resizing, lock the aspect ratio to prevent distortion — if you change the width, the height adjusts proportionally. Unlocking it lets you crop or stretch to non-proportional dimensions.

Can I make an image larger without losing quality?

Traditional upscaling (adding pixels) always reduces sharpness because you're "inventing" pixel data. However, AI-based upscaling tools (like Waifu2x or the AI upscaling in Photoshop and Topaz) can upscale 2–4× with minimal quality loss by intelligently filling in details. For our tool, upscaling a small image to a large display size will appear blurry — always use the highest resolution original available.

What is the difference between resizing and cropping?

Resizing scales the entire image (makes it bigger or smaller while keeping all content). Cropping removes the edges of the image to change its shape or focus. To get a 1:1 square from a landscape photo, you'd crop it (not resize). Use our tool to resize; for cropping, most photo editing apps or the Windows Photos app crop tool works well.
