What Is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text used in design and publishing to fill space before final copy is ready. It's been the industry standard dummy text since the 1500s when an unknown printer scrambled a passage from Cicero's "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" for a type specimen book.
Why Use Lorem Ipsum?

Where does Lorem Ipsum come from?
Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero's "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (45 BC), a philosophical treatise on ethics. The standard Lorem Ipsum passage ("Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet...") was scrambled in the 1500s by a printer. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor, traced the source in 1994. The standard version begins: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit..."
Should I use Lorem Ipsum in user testing?
It depends on what you're testing. For pure layout testing (typography, spacing, component sizing), Lorem Ipsum works well. For user testing that involves reading comprehension, navigation, or content comprehension, use realistic content — users interact very differently with placeholder text vs. actual content. Nielsen Norman Group research consistently shows that real content reveals usability issues that Lorem Ipsum masks.
